Thank you to the Delia’s and Lange’s for providing their homes.

Anniversaries – Wicke 54 yrs

Donna Ritchie attended meeting to take photos.

Old Business – none

New Business – At the October 19 board meeting, it was voted to raise the dues to $15.  The reason for this is the increase in costs.  What will the new board do?  We’ve been subsidizing dinners due to low turnout.

The scholarship money may be less this year due to the low turnout.  $1 per person goes into scholarship plus the 50/50.

We have 105 members.  If we had 40-50 members at each meeting, we wouldn’t need to raise dues.  We still have to pay set-up and tear-down.  This is the second month we haven’t been in the red.

Mary Jane Kelly says she pays for everything – paper, postage, etc.

Discussion:  How do we get the rest of the membership to attend meetings.

Maybe new POA person will have lower priced menu options.

Save the date reminder

The car club calls every member and has speakers

If we raise dues, will others come or quit

A motion was made by Nick Vernaci to raise the dues to $15 and seconded by Tammy Revard.  The motion was passed by the majority.

The membership application will go out soon and is due in January.

Parade of Lights update:  2014 board changed all boats into one category – did not separate pontoons, ski boats etc.  There used to be a club category.

2014 categories:

Sweepstakes

Commodore

Extraordinaire

Brilliant

Star

Bob Templeton believes clubs should be judged separately.

John Petersen made a motion to leave the decision to the chairperson if not selected in time, the Commodore will make the decision.

All judges must be impartial.

Open comments:

Kathy Barbay reported on our Progressive Dinner, scheduled for Saturday, September 20th. Please pay your $3.00 to Sally Wedehase or Kathy Barbay and sign up to bring appetizers or desserts, a $1 of will go to our Scholarship Fund and $2 is for paper goods, etc.  It will start at 4:30 from Holiday Harbor.  The first stop is at Al and Marilyn Moreno's and  will be ending with dessert with Steve and Pam Oskey.  We have 30 people signed up so far and just two boat captains have step forward to supply our “progression.”  We need boats and captains, if you have a boat and need a captain we can do that too!  Let's make this work!

Margaritaville, chaired by Karen Bootow, will take place on Friday, October 24th at Holiday Harbor.  Any club business will take place before the picnic begins.  There will be NO MEETING on Thursday, October 23rd.  Larry Garland will provide music and there will be prizes for best costume, goofiest costume, etc.  It'll be “Cheeseburgers in Paradise!”  RSVP by October 1st to:  [email protected] or call 244-1437.  It will be a fun time, don't miss out!

Parade of Lights chairman, Vlad Worotko, has a flier ready for our up-coming “Parade of Lights” event on Saturday, 13 December 2014!  It's coming up fast!  Let's get more boats than ever in this year's event and make it truly memorable.  Get your friends and neighbors involved, we can help with ideas and planning.  This is a fun, fun, fun event.

Kathy Barbay, storekeeper, announced there is a woman's navy blue large Yacht Club shirt for $33.00 in stock, so you can buy this now!  We can order any size, in various colors and styles PLUS we have hats and we have a burgee or two in stock, so rush on over.

Vice Commodore Bert Barbay with his Webmaster hat on, said the website is up to date with the current newsletter, financials and minutes.  Visit our website at:

 http://clyc2014.webs.com/

Birthdays: Al Barr, Nick Vernaci Randy Bonner and Nancy Horton.  Anniversaries: Joanne and Mike Lee celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary this month.  They met while working at Montgomery Wards. Candy Peterson said “Thanks, Bert, for the Storm Game.  What fun.”

New Business concerns: Randy Bonner said the next  impact to the Canyon Lake Yacht Club is the increase in costs here at the Lighthouse, there are increases in labor hourly rates and the cost of food is going up. Chris Mitchell is trying to work with us regarding all these variables.  Nick Vernaci explained the four tier pricing and the cost of having the Lighthouse furnish coffee and tea or bringing it in ourselves, which we used to do.  That is a cost of $2.00 per meal.  There is much to be considered, do you want sandwiches and salad or a hot dinner?  Or you can bring in a licensed caterer, no tea was supplied when Thomas' catered.  Bar Service is not required, do we want it?  After considerable discussion there were no determinations.  Commodore Oskey reminded us this will NOT affect our September meeting, and October is our Holiday Harbor Margaritaville-Cheeseburgers in Paradise event, so by November this should be worked out between the POA and the Lighthouse and the various clubs.  The August 29th Friday Flyer should have some finalized information.

ACTION ITEM: The Train Float needs a home, Jim Bond has been storing it, but that is no longer an option.  It will be destroyed unless we can find a home for it.  Pictures will be posted on the website so look and consider.  It is about 20-25 feet long.  Let's find it a home, it does need work, but it is a great float.

Nominations for 2015 officers will take place at our October meeting which is also our Margaritaville picnic.  November we will be holding elections for our 2015 officers.

The 50/50 drawing was won by Linda Garland.

Move to adjourn was made by John Peterson, seconded by Larry Garland; we adjourned at 8:03p.m.

General Membership Meeting Minutes

Pool View Room

Thursday, 24  July 2014

Meeting was called to order at 5:54p.m. by Commodore Steve Oskey, who led the Pledge of Allegiance.  The Invocation was given by Pam Oskey.

A  buffet dinner finished with a hot fudge sunday was enjoyed by all.

Commodore Oskey resumed the meeting by announcing he had met Andy Anderson (now 93 years old) who told him he was the first Canyon Lake Yacht Club Commodore.  It wasn't called the Canyon Lake Yacht Club then however.  Perhaps we can persuade him to come and talk to us and fill in some history of our club.

Yeoman PJ Anderson's Minutes from Thursday, 26 June 2014 were approved and seconded.

Purser Joe Henderson's Financial Report was received, approved and seconded.  It was noted that the scholarship funds are paid directly to the college, so those funds have not been dispersed as yet.

Mary Jane Kelly, Membership Chairman, noted our paid membership is 117.

Commodore Oskey advised members should be talking to our neighbors and friends.  New members bring fresh ideas and energy, so extend invitations to potential members.

Past Commodore John Petersen said the Moonlight Cruise, Sunday,  August 10th is progressing nicely.  It is $8 per person, and it will be a lot of fun.  Be at Holiday Harbor by 7:00p.m. Lasagna is being served, BYOB and any ice, etc. you might want.

Kathy Barbay reported on our Progressive Dinner, scheduled for Saturday, September 20th. Please sign up to bring appetizers or desserts.  It will start at 4:30 from Holiday Harbor.  The first stop is at Al and Marilyn Moreno's and  will be ending with desserts at Steve and Pam Oskey's.  You can pay the $3.00 fee to Sally Wedehase or Kathy Barbay.

Margaritaville will take place on Friday, October 24th at Holiday Harbor.  Any club business will take place before the picnic begins.  There will be NO MEETING on Thursday, October 23rd.

Parade of Lights chairman, Vlad Worotko, has a team in place for the Green Dragon.  The Parade of Lights is a project that needs volunteers.  Peggy Clark handled the Holiday Harbor  cookie and hot chocolate operation last year, we need someone for this year.  Chairing the Yacht Club's various projects is an excellent way to connect with members.  Vlad commented on all the organizational plans Commodore Oskey has brought to the Parade of Lights, it has made his job easier.  We need to get the placards out.  Volunteers are needed for decorating and ideas to improve and make this project even more fun. Once Labor Day (Monday, September 1st ) is here we'll be running.  It's coming up fast.

Commodore Oskey advised the home judging should be easier this year, he has given John Petersen the criteria the HOA uses in judging homes from the street, for our judging from the lake.

Commodore Oskey said we need to get boats registered for the Parade of Lights, the more boats the better, if we have to go door to door, whatever we need to do to get floats in the Parade. Let's make this Parade bigger and better than ever before.  Tom and Pat Englehardt entered for the first time this last December and they won a top prize.

Kathy Barbay, Storekeeper, came prepared to take orders for shirts, they come in royal blue, white and red.  Bert Barbay and Nick Vernaci modeled the shirts for men, Nick said they're very soft!  Sally Wedehase modeled the “bling” shirt, and Kathy was wearing her choice of Yacht Club shirts.  Shirts arrive approximately two weeks after ordered.

Nominations for 2015 officers will take place at our October meeting which is also our Margaritaville picnic.  November we will be holding elections for next years' officers.

Vice Commodore Bert Barbay, also our webmaster, said visit our website at:

 http://clyc2014.webs.com/

Bert invited the Yacht Club to join the Volleyball group at Storm Stadium on Wednesday, August 20th to enjoy all you can eat hot dogs free of charge.  The cost of the ticket is just $8.00 per person.  The stadium will open at 5:00 so come early and enjoy.  Someone from Canyon Lake will be singing the National Anthem and we have someone from Canyon Lake throwing out the first ball.  You will have to make reservations through me.  Also I and Kathy have an Alaskan Cruise coming up in September 2015.  Please check the website for more information.  Pam Oskey and Don Wedehase celebrated Birthdays, and Bob Templeton and Jan May celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary, they met on a blind date 23 years ago!

Commodore Oskey thanked Nick Vernaci for another wonderful dinner.  Nick said Sylvia Vernaci has been a big help, and “thank you Steve for such a fun meeting.”  Thank you Taylor and Angel for the wonderful meal and great service.

The 50/50 drawing was won by Doris Thomas.

Move to adjourn was made by Randy Bonner, seconded by John Petersen; we adjourned at 7:58p.m.

CANYON LAKE YACHT CLUB

BOARD MEETING

10 July 2014

Meeting called to order at  A.M. by Commodore Steve Oskey.

IN ATTENDANCE: Commodore Steve Oskey; John Petersen; Vice-Commodore Bert Barbay, Purser Joe Henderson; Yeoman PJ Anderson and First Mate Pam Oskey.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS & ACTIVITIES STATUS:

     a) Moonlight Cruise Event will be Sunday,  August 10th .  We will have a full moon, it is one of the two remaining “Super” moons this year!  We will need 5 to 6 boats for this event: John and Candy Petersen will be one boat and John is getting volunteers with boats, so we should be okay.

     b) Progressive Dinner, chairpersons are Kathy Barbay and Sally Wedehase, scheduled for Saturday, September 20th, is on track. One of the homes will be Commodore Steve Oskey and First Mate Pam Oskey this year (railing may be a problem) and there will be Marilyn Moreno's.  We don't have all the homes finalized as yet.

c/d) Margaritaville will be Friday, October 24th and our Thursday, October 23rd scheduled meeting is canceled , any necessary business will be conducted before the party begins!  Our first annual “Margaritaville” will be held at Holiday Harbor!

  1.
  2.      e) Christmas Tree Decoration is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, November 30th at Pete and Suzi Delia's.  We will need volunteers for the Holiday Harbor drinks and cookies.  The POA has allocated $400 for food and another $400  has been allocated for tags and plaques. Joe Henderson is working on finding a replacement source for plaques.
  3.

     f) Parade of Lights, chaired by Vlad Worotko, is scheduled for Saturday, December 13th at Holiday Harbor.  Judging of the boats will be held at Commodore Oskey's.   We should have a boat direct the entrees past the judging rail at the Oskeys as they leave East Bay.  A history of our Parade of Lights would be nice, Vice Commodore Bert Barbay agreed to address this question to Elinor Martin.

     g) Judging Waterfront Homes, date yet to be announced.  The actual judging is very subjective and there seemed to be no criteria or pattern for determining winners and there is no prize, plaque or certificate awarded to the winners.  After some discussion it was proposed that it shouldn't be within the Canyon Lake Yacht Club's purview to do this judging, it should be the Homeowners Association that has this project.  There is no reason why the CLYC should be doing more than supplying the boats to ferry around the judges.  John Petersen, Past Commodore, said 4 boats are needed to cover the lake, but that would be our only contribution to this project.  This event should be the responsibility of the HOA!  Commodore Steve Oskey will be speaking with the HOA.

     h) The Installation Dinner/Dance will be held in January 2015, this date cannot be determined until after November, this necessitates someone stand in line to get first choice, PJ Anderson will stand in line, unless someone else wants to be at the POA first.

APPOINTMENTS:

     a) Events coordinator is a position that is superfluous.  Vice Commodore Bert Barbay made the motion to eliminate this position and it was seconded by Past Commodore John Petersen.  This position is now discarded.

     c) Menu Coordinator, Nick Vernaci needs a replacement, we need a  volunteer to talk with the Lighthouse Manager, Jeff Main.

First Mate Pam Oskey made a motion to create a new position to be called 'Webmaster', this motion was seconded by Past Commodore John Petersen.  First Mate Pam Oskey further nominated Bert Barbay to fill this position.  Vice Commodore Bert Barbay accepted.

OLD BUSINESS:

  1.   a) Adopt scoring guidelines for Parade of Lights.  We need to find some criteria.

     b) By Laws.  Article 5.2 needs to reflect the changes that were implemented in 2012.  18 December 2011 show the change, however, the By Laws don't reflect this change. The By  Laws should state the commodore's length of term is one year, the then Commodore may run for a 2nd term.  After that 2nd term for that Commodore is completed then there must be a hiatus of at least one year.  After that subsequent Commodore's tenure the previous Commodore may run for office again.  This By Law is only for the position of Commodore, other positions are not limited by this two term constraint.  (Joe Henderson has been Purser for 4 years and Bill Thomas was purser for 7 or 8 years.)  This wording must be determined and agreed upon at the next Board Meeting.

Meeting adjourned 12:18 P.M.

Commodore Oskey introduced the activities report, by making the comment that May has been a very busy month:

Scholarship chairperson, Eileen Hultz, said Kathy Barbay, Cathy Barr, Pam Oskey, Pat Englehardt and Janis Rodriguez have been busy selecting the winner of our $1000 scholarship fund.  Nicole Taylor, a Temescal Canyon High School senior is our winner. A letter inviting Miss Taylor to our June meeting was sent and we will be looking forward to her telling us her background and experiences and advising us of her goals. Commodore Oskey said this is our goal as a club, to give back to the community, this is an important and commendable activity.

Bob Templeton, Fiesta Days chairperson, announced “Fiesta Days Around the world” is this weekend.  We want to thank Judy and Randy Helton for the use of their pontoon in the parade. Lee Norris our co-founder plus Commodore Steve Oskey and family and all our past commodores and their families will be on the pontoon throwing candy!  Past Commodore John Petersen said he will be looking forward to “throwing Candy!” from the boat.  The booth decorating committee spent $100 on new decorations and there is $50 1st prize available, decorating will commence tomorrow night.  Wear your Yacht Club hats and shirts to the event. Lee Norris and Bob will be doing the Costco ice cream run.  Jan May Templeton, Pam Oskey, Candy Petersen and Kathy Barbay will be decorating our booth.  Ilie and Tom Muenzer will have the cash box ready for us, and the roster for volunteers for sales has been set, thank you  to all our volunteers. Tear-down of the booth will be at 4:00.  No passes are available so be authoritative and commanding to get through with your golf carts.  It's a fun day, so have fun! Monday is Memorial Day, remember those who sacrificed their lives for us.

Commodore Oskey reminded us June is coming, much is happening and next on our agenda is the June 26th meeting.

Gail McCall is working to make our first outing of the year a jolly good time!  On June 26th the fun and games will begin at 5:00pm at Roadrunner Park on Gray Fox.  The meeting will begin at 6:00pm.  It is a pot luck, BYOB affair.  Bob advised: Eileen Hultz will be presenting the Scholarship Award and Larry Garland will be bringing his sound system equipment.  So be there!!

Commodore Oskey declared we as yet have no chairperson for our Christmas “Parade of Lights.” Volunteers this is an opportunity for you. This is a big affair and we need to stand tall, as we do for all our events.  We will need a chairperson by August, so start giving this some serious thought.

Publicity, Commodore Oskey reported, has been active.  Pete and Suzi Delia managed the lake cleanup event beautifully, once again. Once the cleanup was completed the feed was on and culminated in watching the Kentucky Derby with California Chrome winning, all very apropos.  There was a much deserved round of applause for Pete and Suzi.  Our Vice Commodore Bert Barbay, always there with his camera, managed to take a picture, recording this event for posterity, which appeared on the front page of the Friday Flyer.  His photos are always awesome.  We're sure Bert will have his camera for Fiesta Days  even though his duties as Grand Marshall will hinder some picture taking so Bob Ireland will be assisting Bert's picture taking on this eventful day.  The May edition of Canyon Lake Life published our article on the Yacht Club, with pictures.  It was a great spread.  Lake cleanup used to be done twice a year, we need to do it – a date will have to be decided upon.  It was suggested that the Commodore and First Mate host said event.

Storekeeper, Kathy Barbay said she has inventoried our “stock.”  Burgees are on hand, for members only, at just $35!!  We have shirts, bling shirts, sweatshirts, hats and there are new and more modern shirts, all now available, even Parade of Lights sweatshirts!

Webmaster, Vice Commodore Bert Barbay, the “vicest guy in the world” keeps our Yacht Club site current.  Use our website to check event dates and places and membership, it's all there.

 http://clyc2014.webs.com/

Announcements: Past Commodore Bob Templeton said Fiesta Days we're selling ice cream, $1.50!  Dianne Skidmore asked if the infamous ice cream truck music could be played, advised that is not allowed.  The sandwich board concept was suggested with Mayor Randy Bonner wearing it, Randy vetoed the idea.

Birthdays: Bob Clark, Commodore Steve Oskey, and Bob McCall enjoyed birthday.

Anniversaries: Vice Commodore Bert Barbay and Kathy Barbay celebrated their 32nd!

Commodore, Steve Oskey advised the Pot Luck meeting will be Thursday, June 26th at Roadrunner Park.

The February alum treatment has helped our lake.  And yes, the Delta Smelt has priority over  human population water concerns.  Water storage reservoirs are being built and it is costly.
